Final Reflection

One of the three most important things I have learned this year are all of the vocabulary words I have learned. These are very important for me to improve my reading comprehension. The second important thing I learned is how to write objective summaries correctly. This will help me in my future. Finally the most important thing I have learned is the TIQA writing format. I will remember this for the rest of my life and use this to write essays and papers. The nicest thing someone in our class has done for me is to give some very helpful advice on my 8th grade presentation speech. This helped to make my speech much better and more easily comprehendible.

Something that I have taught my classmates this year is to not make the same mistakes I do. I cannot think of anything else anyone would have learned from me. The area that I feel I have made the biggest improvement in is my writing. I have learned better vocabulary which has helped to increase what I can say. I have also learned how to write proper objective summaries. Finally I have learned the TIQA writing format. I am very proud of the speech that I wrote and presented because I had never done anything like that before. The most challenging part of this year for me was completing homework on time. I often would have to stay up late doing homework because I could not do it earlier because of activities. Homework has been a real challenge for me.

I think the best piece of writing I did this year was my SeaWorld/Blackfish argumentative essay. I think it is the best because I included stats and information to support my claim and built my argument well. My favorite book that I read this year was Jurassic Park. It was very interesting to see how it was different and similar to the movie. I also liked the different scenes and plot that was not in the movie. Some advice I would give to students who will be in this class next year is to stay on top of your homework. Although this is not always possible because of activities and other homework it is very important to do your best.

Aphorism Blog

1- Explain the aphorism in detail. what was Morrie's main message?

2- Relate the aphorism to a movie, song, historical event, current event, personal experience, etc. and explain in detail how the example you have chosen relates to the aphorism.

3- Evaluate the aphorism by explaining why you agree/disagree with it. Give specific reasons for your position and specific evidence from the text to support your position.

4- Take a picture of your aphorism to use as your graphic.

"Forgive yourself before you die. Then forgive others." This quote means that before you die you should forgive yourself and others. It also is saying that to forgive others you should forgive yourself first. Morrie's main message is that the best way to end you life is with everyone forgiven. He says you should start by making sure that you have forgiven yourself for any mistakes you have made. Then you should forgive others for anything they have done for you. This goes along with his theme of learning how to die. If you forgive yourself and others early in life, before you know death is close, you will be better able to live.

One example of this is Nelson Mandela. He was kept in captivity for many years. Although his captors were cruel to him when he was released he was not angry at them. Even when he became president of South Africa he did not try to punish the people that had held him prisoner. This helped him gain a very good reputation. This shows that forgiveness is very important.

I agree with this aphorism because I think forgiveness is very important. If you do not forgive people you would always be angry and would not be able to live a fulfilling life. I also agree that you need to forgive yourself first because often you are very hard on yourself. Even when you make a small mistake you often make yourself feel really bad about this. That is why I agree with this aphorism.

Tuesday's with Morrie: 4/30/15

The tuesday that has stood out to me the most is when Morrie talked about death. One quote that I found especially significant was, "When you learn how to die, you learn how to live." I can see that this is true and that it is very important to know that you are going to die and how you want to do. If you did not think about this you could be lazy and unmotivated. I was also surprised that Morrie was so accepting that he was going to die. I think that this is how he deals with all of the difficult events in his life, by realizing them and accepting them. He then tries to continue his life around these events.

Another tuesday that I found interesting was the tuesday where they discussed love and marriage. Morrie discusses marriage and tells the true purposes and values of it. He also tells why so many people get divorces now. I think that he was right that it is one of the most significant experiences of life to have someone who can almost read your mind and that you can work extremely well with. I also found it very moving that Morrie's wife was trying to spend time with Morrie and that she stayed up all night with him and did not complain.

The last tuesday that spoke to me was when they talked about how love endures. It was very interesting to me that one reason Morrie said he was not afraid of dying was because he knew people would remember him. He knew that people remembering him would keep his spirit alive. I also especially liked the quote, "Love each other or perish." I feel like this sums up all of what Morrie is teaching Mitch. He is saying that if you do not love others, you will sink into nothingness. I found this very inspirational.

Jurassic Park: 4/23/15

Pages: 181-268
Prompt: Summarize and describe the characters.

I started reading right after the power in the park was out and the kids had been thrown off the road by the T-Rex. They escaped with Grant and saw one of the people who was with their group. They then saw the young T-Rex kill him. They walked to a service shed near the herbivore enclosure. They did not know that a T-Rex was there. They were walking to get back to the safe area when they were attacked by a T-Rex while taking a boat to safety. The T-Rex swam after them. They escaped when the T-Rex was distracted by the younger T-Rex taking its food. Meanwhile the people in the safe area were trying to repair the problems with the security and phones.

One of the main characters is John Hammond. He is the owner of Jurassic Park. He does not know very much about the park's systems and operations. When the park's systems begin to malfunction, he becomes frustrated with the workers and yells at them. He does not understand how to solve the problems and panics because his grandkids are lost in the park. Grant handles the situation he is in very well. He calmly deals with problems while attempting to escape with the kids to the safe area. He has to avoid the T-Rex that is running loose in the park and is almost caught by it on multiple occasions.

One other character is Lex. The is the granddaughter of John Hammond. She enjoys playing baseball and has a mitt and ball the whole time she is lost on the island. The becomes very stressed out and asks where her parents are multiple times. She often argues with her brother, Tim. A final character is Tim, John Hammond's grandson. He is very interested in dinosaurs and knows more than many people on the island. This helps the group when they are trying to escape.

Life is Beautiful 4/16/15

The film Life is Beautiful is very comparable to the book Night, which is also about the Holocaust. In both movies the beginning talks about before the concentration camps when the Jews. They both describe how the Jews were treated badly. They then both talk about the train ride to the concentration camps. The buildup part of the movie and book are very important because they show how the situation started and progressed as time went on. It also shows that these people were living normal lives before the Nazis came into power. One difference between these two movies is where the main characters start out. In Life is Beautiful the main character starts in Italy, which started out as an Axis country. In Night the main character starts in a country that is captured by Germany. This results in the main characters having different experiences.

The tone of the two pieces are very different. In Life is Beautiful the tone is hopeful. The tone is funny at times because Guido is telling Joshua lies about the camps and jokes to keep him happy. In the book Night the tone is depressed. There is no humor and the main character is very depressed the entire book. This makes the movie and book appear very different when they are actually very similar. The tone of each piece is also very important to how it is viewed. The movie Life is Beautiful is thought of as a story about hope during bad times because of its tone. The book Night is more of a story about the horrors of the Holocaust because of its tone.

Life is beautiful throughout the film because of Guido's uplifting attitude. When Guido is in Italy he is very cheerful. He talks very kindly to everyone and is very energetic. Many people like him because of this. This attitude also makes life beautiful while he is in the concentration camps. When the commanding offices needs a translator to tell the Jews the rules, Guido volunteers. He does not know what the officer is saying but instead makes jokes and the officer cannot understand. This makes the tone of the arrival at the camp much more light hearted. This also makes Joshua very happy which is Guido's goal.

Night: 3/31/15

**Spoilers**

Focus Question: How do Elie's experiences during the Holocaust change him as a person?

Before Elie went to the concentration camps he was a very sympathetic and kind person. When Moishe the Beadle returns from being deported Elie writes, "I often sat with him, after services, and listened to his tales, truing to understand his grief." Elie was a very kind and sympathetic person and sat with Moishe after he returned. Although he could not believe what Moishe was saying, he still tried to be kind to him. Elie was a very kind person, to all people. Elie was also very religious. He says that when he was a child, "By day I studied Talmud and by night I would run to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the Temple." Elie was very religious and used this to guide his decisions. He thought that everything that God did was for the good of humans.

Elie undergoes great changes throughout the Holocaust. He becomes much less sympathetic through his experience. When his father is beaten he says, "What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked." This shows that Elie cared very little about the conditions others were in and only cared about himself. He had only been in the camps for one day and already had lost much of his caring and kindness. The camps had began to make him a completely different person. Elie also lost his faith in God in the concentration camps. When he had just arrived and seen babies being burned he said, "Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?" Elie thought that god had abandoned him and the other prisoners. He became very angry at God because of this. This was the start of him abandoning his religion.

Elie's experiences during the Holocaust make him much less sympathetic than he was before he was put in the ghetto. When Elie's father dies in the camp in Germany Elie says, "If I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!" He was not upset that his father had died and even felt free from the burden of supporting him. Before the Holocaust Elie was very kind to his father and even during the beginning of the Holocaust he grew even closer to his father. The horrors of the Holocaust caused Elie to not feel sadness when his father died. Elie's experiences also made him doubt God. When Jews would normally fast Elie says, "And then there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God's silence." He was very angry at God. He did not fast to show his respect towards God because he felt that God was being unfairly silent. He thought that God was allowing these Jews to die and that he should not respect or honor him. At the beginning of the book, before the Holocaust, Elie was very religious and would even cry when he prayed. His opinion towards God was changed by the Holocaust.

3rd Quarter Reflection

I think that in third quarter I have made the most improvements in my ability to pick out the important details of a text. I have practiced this through writing blogs, writing AoWs, and writing essays using sources. When writing the Seaworld/Blackfish argumentative essay I had to pick out the most important parts of sources to write a convincing essay. This helped me develop that skill.

What I am most proud of in the new year is that I wrote my first thematic essay. I have always heard of these essays but have never written one. I learned a lot and practiced my writing skills. I am very proud of this accomplishment. The most challenging part of third quarter was keeping up with homework. I have many activities outside of school and not much time to do homework. Because we receive so much homework I often had to stay up past ten working on homework.

Night: 3/26/15

Pages: 1-46
Prompt: Describe the main characters

The main character is Elie Wiesel. Elie is very religious. He studied the Jewish scriptures and was taught by Moche the Beadle about Judaism. When he is in the camps he often thinks about God but wonders why he does not help him. He is also very young compared to the other prisoners. This is because he lied when he was asked his age. This causes him to not be able to make decisions as easily. It is also harder for him to deal with daily life in the camps.

Another main character is Elie's father. He is fifty years old. This makes it very difficult for him to keep up with the other prisoners. He is also very generous to Elie. When one of them is very hungry the other gives them their rations. He also is very emotional. He gets very sad when Elie suggests killing himself. Although they are in a death camp he thinks they should stick together.

A supporting character at the beginning is Moche the Beadle. He is very religious and teaches Elie about Judaism. He is very poor and stays mostly to himself. He is taken by the Germans, escapes, and returns. He tries to warn people about the Germans but they do not listen to him. This makes him very upset. This shows that he is a very caring person because he returns to the town to warn people about danger.

AoW Impressions

Today I learned much more about the Holocaust today. I learned that after WWII there were thought to be around 7,000. It is now known that there were around 42,500 camps. Next, I learned about what survivors are doing now in their daily lives. Many survivors are telling their stories to the world. I also learned that there are meet-ups between Holocaust survivors and liberators and between survivors and captors. These are probably going to be the last meetings because all survivors are now very old.

I also learned about current disputes about the Holocaust. I learned that a Holocaust captor was recently discovered and is being tried for 300,000 murders. I also learned that a Holocaust survivor was going to have a meeting with one of his captors. The captor had been interviewed and said he was unapologetic for what he did. The survivor was upset by this and the meeting was canceled. I discovered that some people do not like thinking about the Holocaust. In Israel Holocaust Remembrance Day is not celebrated because the people there think that the best way to honor the victims is to not be sad about their deaths.

Berlin Memorial Blog

I learned that the Nazis strategically took rights away from Jews so they would not be suspected by other countries and so they could carry out their plans effectively. I also learned that most of Jew's rights were taken away by the Nazi's. I think this monument was build as an apology to the Jews. Although this is not enough of an apology it is apologizing. I noticed that in certain years there were many laws passed but in some years few were passed. These years often matched up with other significant events. I think the restrictions on where I was allowed to go would be the hardest to deal with. This would be hard because I would not be allowed to do anything other than sit at my house and shop for food in the restricted times.

AoW Impressions: 3/8/15

This week there were not as many articles about ISIS. I did not see any article's about ISIS executing or killing innocents. I do not know if this was because there were less killings or if it is because people did not want to chose an article about ISIS after most of the articles last week were about ISIS. I saw two kinds of articles about ISIS. The first was about ISIS recruiting three girls. They talked about how the government was tracking them and telling them to come back. The other type was about ISIS attacking a major archeological site. This was the article I chose.

There were many other kinds of articles that people chose. One kind was about the dress that either appears black and blue or white and gold. I see white and gold but a lot of the people I know see black and blue. Another type of article was about Ebola. These were all talking about a cure that had been developed for Ebola. Finally another main type of article was about diseases. There was one about parents that are changing vaccination schedules because of myths. Another was about a deadly bacteria escaping in a Luisiana lab.

The Death Cure: 2/25/15

Spoilers
Pages: 148-262
Prompt: Summarize

When I left off Thomas had just gotten trouble with some kind of police man. The police man intended to sell him because he was immune to the flare. As the man loaded Thomas into his car a hovering police machine came by him and killed the police officer. It was the person from WICKED that had talked to Thomas' group during the trials. He tried to convince Thomas to came back to WICKED and help make a cure. He also told Thomas that Newt was very sick with the Flare and was starting to go crazy.

When he left Thomas found his friends and they started back to where they were staying. On the way back to their room they noticed that there were almost no people on the streets. It was night time so they could not see well. They noticed some shadows moving around them. They seemed to be trying to sneak up on them. The next morning when they went outside they noticed that there were almost no people on the streets. They decided to leave the city to escape and to try to find Newt.

After they left the city they found Newt. He had given Thomas a letter but he had not read it. He was very angry at Thomas and the group and told them to leave. After they left Thomas read the letter. Newt had wanted Thomas to kill him before he went crazy. Then Thomas went to a group called the Right Arm. This was a group that fought WICKED. They were planning to invade WICKED's headquarters. They needed Thomas to pland a device that would render WICKED's weapons useless. Thomas pretended to want to help make the cure to get into WICKED. On the way to WICKED's headquarters Thomas saw Newt. Newt begged for Thomas to kill him and Thomas shot him in the head. When Thomas got to WICKED's headquarters and planted the device WICKED told him that they needed his brain for a cure.

AoW Impressions for 2/20/15

This week most of the articles people chose were about ISIS. Almost all of these blogs were focused on the events that have happened involving Egypt. ISIS captured 21 Egyptians and killed them. Egypt responded by bombing some of ISIS's strategic positions such as training camps and ammunition dumps. These articles talked about whether or not this was the right thing and what will happen in the future. Some even suggested that Europe is in great danger because of ISIS.

Most of the articles that did not talk about ISIS talked about Russia and Ukraine. My article was about the danger that Russia posed to Europe. One specific event it focused on was when, recently, Russian bombers flew down the English Channel. RAF jets were scrambled to escort the bombers away. The article also talks about how Russia is looking to capture large areas of countries in Europe. The article said that the best way to deal with this problem is quick action against Russia.

The Death Cure: 2/19/15

Pages: 1-148
Prompt: Describe the setting

So far in the book the characters have been trapped and escaped. They were trapped in WICKED's headquarters. They fight their way out and escape on a plane. They fly to a city and hide from WICKED. Thefind someone they knew and are protected. The setting was very important to the plot because it created many of the problems of the book.

At the beginning the setting is inside the headquarters of WICKED. This was a labratory where the scientists did their experiments. There were many different rooms where the scientists could do their experiments. There is also a hanger where all the planes that the scientists use are kept. Finally there is a cell where prisoners are kept. All of these areas are very important to the plot.

Later in the book the characters go to Denver. There is a wall around the city to keep out unwanted people. Many people know that they escaped from WICKED and are trying to catch them. Many people in the city are also very sick and there are guards that are testing and capturing them. These infected people cause a problem because they do not like the main characters.

The Maze Runner Book Talk

The Maze Runner by James Dashner is a scientific fiction book about a group of teenagers trapped inside a maze. They are given basic supplies and an area that is safe from the animals inside the maze. Someone outside the maze is monitering them and putting them through different challenges as tests. The kids have set up a government and have leaders. They are very organized and handle the problems they are faced with very well. The main character is Thomas. He is very brave and smart and helps the people escape the maze.

I liked this book because of how suspensful it was. It is very suspensful because of how little the people in the maze know. Their memory was erased before they were sent into the maze and they do not know why they are there. They do not know the reason they are in the maze and neither does the reader. This makes you wonder what will happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books about the future or survival books. I like both of these kinds of books which is why I think I liked this book so much.

AOW Reflection

Prompt: Now take a moment to reflect upon your impressions of what you have learned from the array of articles in at least two well written paragraphs, using evidence from your graphic organizer.
One of the things that I learned from reading the articles is that many things are improving in the world. I learned that women's rights are improving. They used to not be accepted in the STEM field but now they are. I also learned that the the news does not normally talk about good things but always talks about the bad things. Finally, I learned that many people are working together to stop Ebola.

Another thing I learned is that ISIS is a huge problem. I learned about ISIS holding Japanese prisoners hostage and demanding ransoms for their safe return. I learned that they already killed one of the hostages. I also learned that ISIS was illegally capturing oil fields and using them to collect profit. Finally I learned that Russia was still trying to capture part of Ukraine. They are providing funding and aid to communist rebels.

Maze Runner: 1/28/14

Pages: 233-end
Prompt: Describe the setting.

The main setting of the book is in a large maze. The people who come up into the maze come into an area called the glade. This is a huge area with trees and plants where the gladers are safe. They have food provided and  are safe from the Greivers, large creatures who can kill the gladers. The Grievers roam inside the maze at night but cannot go into the glade because of doors that close at night. There is a forest in the glade where the gladers can get wood and other supplies. There is also a large grassy area where the gladers, the people who live in the glade, mostly live and build their structures.

In the forest there is a graveyard for the gladers that have died. There is also an area where the gladers get fertilizer for their crops. In the grassy area there are many structures there are the glader's houses and buildings. There is also the map room where all the maps of the maze are kept. This is also where the running shoes and weapons are kept. Also in the glade there is "the box". This is a metal elevator where new gladers come into the maze and suppies are delivered.

There are four enterences to the maze, one on each of the walls around the glade. Inside the maze there are eight sectors that are all separate. There is also the cliff, where the Grievers come in and out of the maze. Every night the maze changes and moves making it very hard to solve. The moving maze was important because it helped stop the maze. When all of the movements are mapped it spells out a word in each sector. When this was typed in to a keypad in the Greiver hole it shut down the maze.

Maze Runner: 1/21/15

Prompt: Describe the main characters.
Pages: 1-233

In this book the characters are trapped inside a large maze and all of their memory is gone. They are given new people and supplies by the people who trapped them. The main character is Thomas. Thomas is the second to last person who is sent into the maze. The last person is a girl that knows him from their past life. When Thomas first learns about the jobs he has a deep desire to be a runner. A runner is a person who goes into the maze and explores it. Thomas is very brave. When the leader of the group is about to be trapped in the maze overnight Thomas goes into the maze to help him even though he knows that nobody has ever survived a night in the maze. He survives and helps the two people with him survive.

Thomas is also very dissatisfied with being treated as someone who is weak. He is treated as needy because he is the newest person in the maze except for the girl who is unconscious. He is called a "greenie" which means that he is new and inexperianced. He is extremely dissatisfied with this name and trys to prove that he can be productive and equal. This shows that he is determined because he is not satisfied with being thought of as needy and trys very hard to get rid of this title.

Another one of the main characters in this book is Minho. He is the leader of the runners. He is very experianced and can navigate the maze by memory. He teaches Thomas about how to survive and navigate the maze and is with Thomas when he survives the night in the maze. Another one of the main characters is Alby. He is the leader of the whole group. He is very strict and punishes people when they do things wrong. He is rescued by Thomas and Minho when he is stuck in the maze at night.

TKAM Book vs. Movie

What do you think is the most important difference between the written and filmed version? Provide evidence with specific details.

I think there were three important differences between the book and the movie. The first difference it that the children are not as facinated with Boo. They do not attempt to cantact him as many times. The only time they try to see him is when they sneek into his backyard. This makes them not seeing Boo much less suspensful. It is also less meaningful when they see Boo at the end. I think that the book's version was better because of the suspense and meaning of Boo coming out at the end. This was one of the major differences between the book and the movie.

Another difference between the book and the movie is the focus on the theme of courage. In the book Atticus says the same saying three times. In the movie he does not say it at all or only says it once. There is also not the same amount of focus on courage not being fighting. This was a very important theme in the book. It changes the whole tone of the movie. I think the book's version was better because it made the story more meaningful.

What I think was the most important difference was was the amount of time the stories took place over. In the book the story takes place over three years. In the movie it seems like it only takes place over about 6 months. In the book a major theme was growing up and coming of age. This was barely talked about in the movie. The theme of growing up was almost completely eliminated. The only time it was even mentioned was when Jem said once to Scout that she couldn't come with him and Dill but she did anyway. This changed the entire atmosphere of the movie. I think the book's version was much better.
